CR in Bulgaria for pensioners
As you are already familiar, pensioners can receive CR in Bulgaria status unobstructed (under the Law on aliens, art. 24, paragraph 11, item 10)
First, you need to obtain an D visa, and after its receipt documents must be submitted in Migration Department right in Bulgaria.
A list of required documents for obtaining an D visa for Bulgaria (as an insured pensioner)
- An international passport + a copy of it
- An application
- Medical insurance with minimum coverage 30 thousand Euro
- 2 colour photos, 35/45 mm
- A statement about the size of the pension for three past months (translation + legalization + apostil)
- A retirement certificate (translation + legalization + apostil)
- A rental contract or a notary deed, certified by a Bulgarian notary/or Embassy
- A bank statement (an account must be opened in a Bulgarian bank, the amount must be at least 2200 lv. or the equivalent in Euro)
- A conviction status certificate (translation + legalization + apostil, validity – 6 months)
We draw your attention to the fact that the package of documents for visa D (long-term) must exclusively be submitted personally in the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria. All documents, besides the passport and the application, must be submitted in 2 copies, i.e. an original or a certified copy + an ordinary copy.
After you have received the long anticipated visa D, you may proceed to submission of the documents for acquiring CR in Bulgaria status.
List of documents for first-time submission for acquiring CR in Bulgaria status as an insured pensioner
- An application (Migration Office in Burgas will complete it for you)
- A copy of the passport with the pages of the photo, personal information, visa E and the stamp for the latest entry in the country
- A Notary Deed (copy) or a rental contract (a certified copy)
- A bank statement from a Bulgarian bank (with availability of at least 4400 lv. for pensioners)
- A conviction status certificate (translation and legalization + apostil, validity – six months from the date of issue)
- A statement about the size of the pension for three past months (translation + legalization + apostil)
- A medical insurance for the entire period of residence with the minimum coverage 30 thousand Euro
- A payment order for the processing of documents (10 lv., requisites may be obtained from Migration Department)
* it is advisable to submit a certified copy of the statement of the size of the pension or a retirement certificate (translated and certified), so that the original can remain with you for subsequent renewal.
In subsequent years you will have to renew your status, this is done every year. Documents for renewal must be submitted not later than 2 weeks before the expiration date of the period of “validity”, indicated on the card.

- A copy of the international passport + a copy of the page with the stamp to the latest entry in the country
- A copy of the identity card
- A Notary Deed (a copy) or a rental contract (a certified copy)
- A bank statement from a Bulgarian bank (with availability of at least 4400 lv. for pensioners)
- A statement of the size of the pension or a retirement certificate (translation and legalization)
- A medical insurance for the entire period of residence with the minimum coverage 30 thousand Euro
- A payment order for the processing of documents (10 lv.)
